Lidl Chef Select Canja de Galinha Sem Batata 400g
I saw a reel this week about what it’s like being married to a Portuguese. The woman was sitting on the beach on a super hot day and her husband went to get her a snack and comes back with a bowl of steaming soup…
This comically illustrates how the Portuguese feel about soup.
The Portuguese love soup. I love soup. I would happily eat soup on a hot beach.
Ready Made Soup in Portuguese Grocery Stores
Portuguese grocery stores tend to have a nice selection of ready made soups in the refrigerated section and a few in the freezer section (like this green one and this orange one – coming soon).
You’ll find the famous caldo verde (green soup) made with greens like kale or collard greens and chouriço. Aside from that you’ll find a variety of vegetable based soups, mostly creamy, and most with potatoes (aka batatas).
But sometimes you just want some chicken soup!
Chicken Soup in Portugal
For whatever reason I’ve found it difficult to find a basic chicken soup in Portugal. Of course you can make your own and that’s always the best, but sometimes you aren’t up for that.
Bouillon cubes are popular in Portugal, but you don’t commonly see premade chicken stock or chicken broth to use as a base for soup or other cooking purpose unlike in the US where you will find an aisle full of vegetable, chicken, and beef stock and broth options.
When I saw this chicken soup at Lidl I had to give it a try!
Chef Select Canja Galinha Sem Batata
Chef Select Canja Galinha Sem Batata is a chicken noodle soup without potatoes. Many ready-to-eat soups in Portugal contain potatoes, whether in chunks or blended for texture and thickness.

This chicken soup from Lidl receives an A nutrition score and comes in a single serve package which you can microwave, but I opt to reheat on the stovetop personally.
Ingredients & Nutrition Facts
What I love about the fresh soups throughout Portugal is they tend to have a short ingredient list that you can feel good about.
Here are the ingredients for Lidl’s canja de frango:
- Shredded cooked chicken
- carrots
- onion
- salt
- parsley
- durum wheat noodles
- mint

Allergens: Contains Gluten!
Also warns that that it could contain vestiges of other allergens like crustaceans, eggs, fish, soy, milk, mustard, mollusks etc.
Protein: 4.7g protein per 100 grams. This bowl is about 400 grams, so thats almost 19 grams of protein from this single serving of soup.
How to Reheat Lidl Chicken Soup
Microwave: 3 Minutes at 850 watts will do the trick according to the package instructions.
I opted to reheat in a pan on my single burner cooktop.

Plenty of Noodles in Chef Select Canja Galinha
Plenty of noodles like Ancini di Pepe make this simple chicken soup more hearty.

Lidl Canja Galinha Review
Now piping hot, you can see the glistening broth of this cozy chicken soup. Shreds of chicken were not bountiful, but were present. Plenty of noodles and a simple, comforting broth made it a pleasure to eat this chicken soup.

I really enjoyed Lidl’s Canja Galinha Chicken Noodle Soup and would rebuy!
What to serve with chicken soup:
- Some crisp refreshing fruits like grapes or sliced apples
- Enjoy with saltine crackers
- Portuguese Bread and Portuguese Olive Oil
- Side Salad
This ready-to-eat chicken soup was purchased at Lidl, a grocery store in Portugal.
