Black Anchor Tavira
One of our first nights in Tavira we walked across the river to the Black Anchor – an Irish Bar and Grill right along the waterfront.
Here’s what we ordered!
Fish & Chips with Mushy Peas — €13.50
We love fish and chips (we have a whole Fish & Chips category on our site!) so we had to give the Black Anchor’s a try.
The cost was 13.50 euro. At the current exchange rate, that’s just shy of $16.

It was late in the evening and we were sitting outside (gotta love that al fresco dining weather even at 9 or 10 pm), so the pictures aren’t the greatest, but hey, it’s something! 🙂
Traditional Sunday Roast — Mix of Pork & Beef — €14.50
We returned to The Black Anchor to try their Traditional Sunday Roast offering.
A Sunday Roast is the kind of thing you may not always feel inclined to make for a party of 2, but is always such a comforting, hearty type of meal.
So it’s lovely to have someone else prepare one for you. 😉

I couldn’t decide between the roast pork and the roast beef so I opted for the combination plate.
It included:
- Roast Pork
- Roast Beef
- Roasted Potatoes
- Mashed Potatoes
- Gravy
- Fresh Vegetables — Cauliflower, Broccoli, Carrots
- Yorkshire Pudding

For the uninitiated, Yorkshire Pudding is not a type of dessert. You can see it sitting next to the summer and winter trees 🥦 in the photo above.
It’s not really “just a roll”, although it has a similar function of being perfect to mop up all the delicious gravy on your plate. It’s quite fluffy inside, hollow and spongy even, similar to an American popover.

Pro Tip: The Sunday Roast at The Black Anchor in Tavira is only available on, well … Sunday 😉 So plan your visit accordingly. The place will likely be busy to set aside time to relax and enjoy the experience.
Also worth noting — Unlike this Pub in Armação de Pêra, you can get Fish and Chips any day at The Black Anchor.
So if you come on a Sunday one person can get the Sunday Roast and the other can get the fish and chips and if you play nicely, you can both enjoy some of each classic British dish! 😀

Black Anchor Tavira, Portugal Review
Our first visit to The Black Anchor was with a large group and in fact, so was our second visit. That always takes on a different dynamic than when you go expressly to enjoy the meal. Even still, I was quite happy with this battered, fried fish!
Black Anchor has indoor pub seating as well as two seperate outdoor spaces, making it a great option to make memories with friends in Tavira. They have live music to enjoy and a solid fish and chips offering!

It’s great to know where you can get Fish and Chips in the Algarve, not to mention a legit Guinness. Looking forward to someday trying We don’t have to “look forward” to it anymore, we tried their traditional Sunday roast and can easily recommend it to locals or travelers visiting Tavira!
