Bakery Porta Nova — A Must Visit in Tavira
Porta Nova is a really great bakery in Tavira, Portugal with high quality bread and baked goods which are fabrico própio, which is a Portuguese phrase meaning essentially everything is homemade / their own production.
You see, many cafes in Portugal have their goods delivered in from larger factories.
So Porta Nova is different, as they are making everything on site and that results in more pride and quality in what you order there.
This post will certainly be updated with photos of additional visits to Porta Nova Bakery.
What We’ve Tried
Papa Seco
A classic and affordable Portuguese roll. I often order one with manteiga (butter) along with a cafe (espresso).
At Porta Nova you can also order this “prensado” (pressed), and they will press it in something like a panini press so that it gets warmed up and the butter melts.

At some cafes there is a small extra charge for this, but as I did not order my papa second this way, I’m not sure if that is the case here.
Meringue with creme
This is a giant meringue!!
It wasn’t a dried out/crunchy stile meringue, but the inside was very soft and almost like a marshmallow.

What is the Yellow Cream in Portuguese Pastries?
The yellow cream/creme used on many Portuguese pastries is called doce de ovos, and is made with egg yolks and sugar syrup.
With this meringue, I thought it was sliced in half with the doce de ovos gluing both sides together, but actually it was just a thin stripe of doce de ovos over the middle of the meringue.
This Portuguese dessert was very, very sweet and I definitely recommend sharing it and enjoying it with a coffee!
Porta Nova Mini Review
I’ve been to Porta Nova at least twice and both times everything was fresh and really high quality. The staff is also really nice which can very much impact your Portugal cafe experience.
I’m looking forward to returning in the future, trying more treats, and sharing the photos with you so you can plan your best Tavira trip!
